Lower Produce Prices Prompt Increased Junk Food Purchases December 1, 2010 According to conventional wisdom, pricey produce condemns low income populations to obesity and its related ailments. The reasoning goes: people would buy more fruit and vegetables — and less unhealthy junk food — if only produce was more affordable. But in an experimental simulation of grocery shopping, lowering produce prices prompted shoppers to buy more junk food! Behavioral scientists at the University of Buffalo re-created the grocery shopping experience by stocking a simulated store with everything from bananas, broccoli and tomatoes to soda, candy bars and potato chips. They gave 42 mothers of various income levels a lump sum to buy a week’s worth of groceries for their families. After the first shopping trip (in which prices reflected those found in the real world), researchers began tinkering with the price tags — raising the cost of unhealthy foods and lowering the cost of healthy items on different occasions. The result? Moms took the money they saved on cheaper fruit and veggies and splurged on junk food. The overall calorie count of purchases went up – not down — when produce prices fell. By contrast, higher prices on unhealthy foods shifted spending to fruit and vegetables. The findings offer some interesting insights at a time when public policy experts are debating whether to impose “sin taxes” on unhealthy food and beverage choices. Specifically, the study suggests the purchasing decisions that are contributing to obesity are less driven by produce prices than by cheap junk food prices and other factors, such as a taste preference for sweet, salty and fatty foods. In fact, when you compare price tags on healthy and unhealthy choices, the latter is often far more expensive. Compare the cost, for example of a banana (roughly 25 cents) to a 90-cent candy bar or a $1.30 side of fries. Make it Happen

Six Keys to Weight Loss Quality over quantity .The and most effective way to lose weight is not by restricting calories. Instead a better approach is to eat yourself skinny by eating whole foods. This allows you to eat plenty of food on a daily basis without any sense of deprivation, hunger or excess cravings. Your energy will improve and the pounds will suddenly come off! Eat fat to lose fat. Your brain is always searching for a source of sugar and fat. The point is to avoid the sugar and give your body an abundant amount of good, healthy fats and oils, daily. This communicates the perfect biochemical message to your body and encourages the weight loss process. By avoiding or restricting fat, you are actually setting the body up to store more fat in the long run, sabotaging any initial results that may have been achieved. Food is fuel. The best way to stay on any program is to look at food differently. Yes, you want to enjoy the taste and texture, but ask yourself if your body will benefit from your food choices. Eating small meals throughout the day allows for stability in your blood sugar and keeps your biochemistry one step ahead, ensuring better food choices. If you wait too long to eat, inevitably you will cave in and eat for pleasure making terrible choices. Then, the cycle will continue until you finally go to sleep or eat what your body really wants. Your caloric intake should follow the path of the sun. (Hmm........what does that mean????). This simply means that as the sun rises during the day, caloric intake should rise as well up until noon to 1:00pm. At this point, the sun begins to set for the day, so caloric intake should begin to diminish. Many people restrict calories throughout the day and then they are famished at dinner, eating their largest meal at night. This is huge obstacle in the weight loss equation. Your body is set up to use a set number of calories for energy and when we overeat, usually from being famished, unused fuel stores as fat. Eat your largest meal at lunch. Consistency is the mother of perfection. In relation to diet, the goal should be consistency and not perfection. Life happens and there will always be special occasions. Food choice is 100% our own responsibility. Be diligent as often as possible but allow yourself some leeway which helps you to be successful in the long run. Practice the 80/20 Rule. This rule can be applied to many areas such as business, money, relationships and food. Basically the rule sets you up for success. In relation to diet, eat nourishing foods 80% of the time and allow yourself 20% leeway. Try not to use the word "cheat" for your 20%. Combat that Fat

The Dangers of Visceral (Intra-abdominal) Fat vs. Subcutaneous Fat Do you remember when you were younger & could eat anything & not gain weight? Now, due to our nutritionally bankrupt foods that keep us constantly hungry & craving & environmental toxins that stimulate fat storage, the odds are good that you’re overweight or obese & your weight is increasing each year. Obesity is now the most important health issue facing the U.S. More than one-third of adults & 17 percent of children & adolescents are obese & these numbers are rising rapidly, according to The U.S. CDC. A recent consumer survey showed that 55% of us are actively trying to lose weight. The location of body fat is either under the skin, or subcutaneous, or inside the abdomen, or visceral. Subcutaneous fat accumulates primarily in the lower body, often producing a “pear shape” more frequently seen in women. Visceral fat is within your belly (not the fat hanging over your belt) & is associated with the “apple shape” observed more often in men. Visceral fat is also known as central or abdominal fat and it is the most dangerous form of fat because it raises the risk of serious adverse health effects & chronic diseases including Cardiovascular Disease, Diabetes & others. Visceral fat typically makes up a relatively small proportion of total body fat but it has serious implications on our health because it lays right on top of the liver, kidneys, pancreas & other organs that are necessary for maintaining our health. Obesity is a complex, dynamic process involving genes & hormones & many other factors. Body fat is considered an endocrine organ because it is metabolically active, is targeted by hormones & secretes hormone-like proteins & other potent chemicals. Visceral fat is especially harmful because it is metabolically very active, causing inflammation within the body & activating cellular pathways that are implicated in diseases. Visceral fat is also associated with insulin resistance, which is a primary factor in Type 2 Diabetes & other obesity-related conditions. Visceral fat accumulation in the liver is a precursor to Cirrhosis & even liver Cancer. The cumulative effects result in glucose impairment, increased triglycerides, altered lipoprotein balance & high blood pressure — collectively comprising the metabolic syndrome, a hallmark for Cardiovascular Disease, Type 2 Diabetes & other associated health risks. Luckily, with Awareness & some effort, visceral fat can be reduced. Exercise is one of the most effective lifestyle modifications for reducing visceral fat, along with some dietary changes from the typical high fat, high-calorie consumption pattern to one of lower fat & calories. Increasing dietary fiber & protein have also been proven to promote visceral fat loss. The best source of protein supplementation is whey protein. Some of the many great benefits of whey protein include whey’s satiating (hunger control) properties & its positive effects on metabolism & muscle protein synthesis, which has the additional benefit of stimulating body metabolism. But beware, not all whey protein supplements are alike. Domestically processed commercial whey products must be Pasteurized, which means they’ve been exposed to high heat & chemicals which kill off all the enzymes & much of the nutritional value & denatures the protein. Look for whey protein that comes from New Zealand & other areas where Pasteurization is not mandatory. Reducing the number of calories consumed & intermittent fasting have both also been shown to reduce stubborn visceral fat. So now is a great time to gradually increase your exercise, decrease your intake of dietary fat & calories & increase your fiber & protein. Look for a source of fiber & non-Pasteurized whey protein that comes in a low calorie, nutrition-dense format, along with nutrients that enable the body to cleanse out toxic impurities on an ongoing basis.
